This lesson is on the color wheel. I was inspired by a pintrest photo of student work which was a cute little snail with a pie style color wheel for it's shell. The lesson was on animal color wheels, where a student would pick an animal and turn the body into a color wheel. I thought we could focus on just the snail and mixing tempera paints to create secondary colors.
We started with a flip chart on colors (primary and secondary), and talked about the color wheel and how important it is.
Then I passed out paper plates to use as a template. They traced the plate in the middle of their paper.
we used baby food jar lids to create the circles for the color wheel.
We traced them together so they would know where to put the circles.
Then we drew the snails body and head.
The fun part was when we
mixed paints to create the secondary colors. After the snails dried we
outlined all of our pencil lines with black marker. Check 'em out!

I heart "Deep Space Sparkle" I really do. I found this AWESOME lesson on their page and had to buy the lesson plan. The kids were totally like, "NO WAY MRS. THEODORE! We can't do that!" You know what? They totally did and they were surprised at themselves. Check it out.
It's that time of year again! It's the City of Fort Worth's KnoWhat2do poster contest. As soon as we finished these posters North Texas was hit with severe weather, tornadoes, hail, high winds. Luckily no one was injured, though my heart goes out to those who lost their homes. After talking about what happened and how we could protect ourselves, I'm pretty confident my 3rd graders know what to do when storms hit. They created some pretty awesome posters too. We used rulers to create our horizontal lines and vertical lines inside our horses.
Then students used red, yellow and blue (primary colors) to paint squares and rectangles on their horses. They were supposed to leave some of the spaces white like Mondrian.
After the paint dried we outlined our pencils lines with black marker. We then cut them out and glued them onto a primary colored construction paper. The last step was adding primary colored string to create the mane of the horse. For 3rd and 2nd grade we created horses. For 4th grade we created bears.
