Butterflies (Kinder)

Here are some lovely butterflies Kinder made for their spring PTA program.

First we talked about the parts of a butterfly, metamorphosis and symmetry.  

Then we folded a large piece of paper in half, we poured paint on one side and refolded the paper.  Then we carefully opened the paper and set it out to dry.

The next time we met I had the students fold their papers and draw a "B" then turned the paper to where the fold was on top.  Then we cut along our "B" line.  Next I gave them a toilet paper roll and had them glue that in the middle of our wings...explaining what symmetry is.  Then I passed out paint sticks and had students add decorations to their butterflies.  

The results are amazing!  Please to enjoy some awesome butterflies!

Picasso Mural (Art Club)

I ordered the Ode to Picasso mural from http://artprojects.me/ (one of my favorite sites for lessons and inspirations) for the 5th grade art club.  They LOVED painting this and really enjoyed seeing it pieced together and on the wall.  I really dig it too.  Good job art clubbers!

Line Armadillos (1st Grade)

1st grade needed some art for their Texas themed PTA meeting, what is more Texan than an armadillo?  Seeing that it's the state small mammal, I thought it would be a perfect art project for them.
First we talked about the armadillo, then we talked about lines and patterns.  I demonstrated how to draw an armadillo then had the students add a background, lines and patterns.  Here are some of their creations!

Shoe Texture (1st and 2nd Grade)

Here is a quick and easy lesson on Texture that students really enjoy doing.

We first talked about Texture and how it can be actual or implied.  Then I demonstrated how to place the shoe in our laps, lay the paper on top, and how to hold a crayon and rub it across the bottom of the shoe.  Then we talked about all the animals, monsters, or insects we could make out of the shoe rubbing. 

The students were so excited to do this lesson.  They LOVED to take their shoe off, in fact some wanted to leave them off the whole class time, lol!

Van Gogh Sunflowers (Kindergarten)

To decorate the auditorium for the Kindergarten PTA program our kinders created sunflowers using oil pastels.  We first learned about the artist Vincent Van Gogh and studied some of his flower paintings.  Then we talked about oil pastels and how to blend them and layer colors on top of each other.  Then we drew them together, using a circle template.  Students were given the oil pastels to color and experiment.  The results were amazing.  Way to go Kinder!

Value & Form (2nd Grade)

2nd graders totally took off with this lesson on form and value.  At first they were pretty unsure of themselves, but after the first form they had it down.  I had them working with ebony pencils, which they LOVE...even though they are a wee bit messy.  They were really excited that they got to use the good white erasers too!  So we first talked about the Elements of Art and the vocabulary terms, form, shape, 2-D, 3-D, and value.  Then we did a quick value scale.  After students got the hang of coloring by using pressure we started the forms.  They loved drawing their little suns.  I hadn't planned on drawing one, but they really dug that idea.  Here are some results...

Safe City Poster Contest (5th Grade)

Every year our school participates in the city wide "Imagine A Safe City" poster contest.  This year only 5th grade was able to participate.  Students are asked to draw what a safe city looks like to them.  Here are the results, along with the winners.  Congrats 5th grade!
